The Rangeland Technology and Equipment Council (RTEC) has roots evolved concurrently with the Society for Range Management (SRM) and has enjoyed a long association with SRM at its annual meeting. This year RTEC will focus on equipment and strategies to reduce pinyon pine (Pinus edulis) and juniper (Juniperus spp.) in the Intermountain area. Speakers will describe four major types of equipment and associated strategies to reduce pinyon pine and juniper that has encroached into sagebrush steppe communities. Equipment discussions will include: 1) Bullhog and hydroaxe, 2) Hand-thinning and mowing, 3) Chains and cables, and 4) Shearers. Costs, effectiveness and environmental impacts will be included in the equipment discussions. Presentations will be followed by a discussion period allowing the audience to share their equipment experiences. Each participant in the RTEC workshop will receive synthesis worksheets comparing the key attributes of the equipment described in the presentations.
